Raku Process
Raku is created from an old Japanese firing process that combines both
fire and smoke to create pottery items with very unique designs. Raku
is characterized by beautiful colors and distinctive, unpredictable
patterns. The raku process is known for its unpredictability. Even experienced
raku artists lose some of their work in this process . . . some pieces
don't get the coloring that one would hope for, other pieces crack or
break during firing due to thermal shock. The unpredictable nature of
the raku process is a large part of what drives Kath on her continued
journey to experiment and explore with her raku pieces.
Caring for Your Raku: Raku should only be used for decorative purposes
as western raku pottery is quite porous. Exposure to UV rays can alter
the color the same as it effects most materials. To clean your raku
piece, simply use water and a soft brush to remove dust.
